Activity Description

Tooth fractures typically result from traumatic injuries to the teeth and surrounding oral structures. Common clinical features include sensitivity and pain. Fractures involving the pulp may lead to periapical lesions, necessitating radiological evaluation. Risk factors include falls, participation in sports activities, traffic accidents, physical violence, and enamel weakening due to dental caries. Management involves restoring the fractured tooth or performing root canal treatment when periapical lesions are present.

The prognosis of a tooth fracture depends on its severity, location, and treatment. Minor fractures have an excellent prognosis with proper restoration. Fractures involving dentin or pulp may require root canal therapy but can have favorable outcomes if treated early. Vertical root fractures and severe crown-root fractures often have a poor prognosis, sometimes requiring extraction. Long-term success depends on oral hygiene, occlusal forces, and underlying conditions like enamel weakening.

This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance learners' competence in evaluating and managing tooth fractures. Participants will gain a broader grasp of the condition's etiology, risk factors, pathophysiology, and presentation. Emphasis will be given to the best diagnostic and therapeutic practices for this condition. Greater proficiency will empower clinicians to collaborate effectively within an interprofessional team caring for affected individuals.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, and dentists.
