Activity Description

Preventing cross infection in the dental office is essential to maintaining a safe environment for both patients and dental healthcare workers. In the dental setting, infectious agents can be transmitted through inhalation, injection, ingestion, or contact with mucosa or skin. Infection prevention and control measures are designed to minimize or prevent the transmission of pathogenic agents among patients, dental staff, and the wider community. These measures include strict adherence to hygiene protocols, use of personal protective equipment, sterilization of instruments, and proper waste disposal. By following established recommendations, dental professionals can significantly reduce the risk of cross-contamination and disease transmission within the practice and beyond.

Participants in this course gain a comprehensive understanding of the critical role infection control plays in dental care and learn effective strategies to implement prevention protocols. The course emphasizes the responsibility of dental healthcare workers in controlling infections and highlights how collaboration with an interprofessional team—including dentists, hygienists, assistants, and administrative staff—enhances patient outcomes. Through coordinated efforts, the team ensures that infection control practices are consistently applied, improving patient safety and reducing the incidence of healthcare-associated infections. This integrated approach fosters a culture of safety and professionalism within the dental office.
