Activity Description

Median nerve injury involves damage to the median nerve, which serves the upper limb's critical motor and sensory functions. The nerve innervates most of the forearm flexor muscles and supplies sensation to the volar aspect of the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and the radial portion of the ring finger. Etiologies include direct trauma such as lacerations or fractures, compressive neuropathies like carpal tunnel syndrome, iatrogenic injury during surgical procedures, and, less commonly, inflammatory or neoplastic causes. Risk factors include repetitive wrist movements, systemic conditions such as diabetes mellitus and rheumatoid arthritis, and occupational exposures to vibrating tools. Clinical manifestations depend on the site and extent of injury and may include sensory loss in the median nerve distribution, weakness in thumb opposition, thenar muscle wasting, and positive provocative tests such as Tinel or Phalen signs. Diagnosis is established through clinical examination, supported by electrodiagnostic studies and imaging when indicated.

This continuing medical education activity enhances clinician competence in diagnosing and managing median nerve injury. Participants learn to identify risk factors and etiologies, recognize clinical patterns associated with various injury levels, and apply evidence-based diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. The course emphasizes conservative and surgical approaches tailored to the severity and chronicity of the condition. Engaging with interprofessional teams—including neurologists, orthopedic or hand surgeons, physiatrists, occupational therapists, and primary care providers—improves care coordination. Such collaboration fosters timely diagnosis, facilitates individualized treatment planning, and improves patient outcomes by reducing long-term disability and optimizing functional recovery.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify the etiology and site of median nerve lesions based on clinical and diagnostic findings.

  • Apply personalized, evidence-based management approaches to median nerve injury to optimize patient outcomes.

  • Improve patient understanding of median nerve injury and its treatment options to enhance adherence and optimize recovery.

  • Collaborate with the interprofessional team to educate, treat, and monitor patients with median nerve injury to improve health outcomes and overall function.
