Activity Description

Pneumonia is a common lower respiratory tract infection that results in significant morbidity and is a leading cause of hospitalization and mortality worldwide. Depending on when and where the patient has acquired the infection, pneumonia can be divided into community-acquired and healthcare-associated. This activity reviews typical bacteria that cause community-acquired pneumonia. Community-acquired pneumonia is acquired outside the hospital when there is no contact with a healthcare setting for at least 30 days before symptom onset. Pneumonia is the leading cause of death in children younger than 5 worldwide, representing 16% of all deaths in this age group. In the United States, although pneumonia is associated with lower mortality in children than in developing countries, it remains the most common cause of hospitalization in children, the second most common cause in adults, and is one of the leading causes of death. Community-acquired pneumonia can be caused by typical or atypical bacteria, although there are more data on epidemiology since the advent of better diagnostic techniques and vaccination against Streptococcus pneumoniae. This activity describes the epidemiology, clinical presentation, and management of community-acquired pneumonia caused by typical bacteria, equipping healthcare professionals with the knowledge and tools to improve patient care for this complex and prevalent condition.
