Activity Description

Electrical injuries are a complex and potentially life-threatening form of trauma often associated with high morbidity and mortality. The severity of these injuries depends on factors such as the type of current, voltage, and the body’s resistance. These injuries are a distinct and potentially life-threatening form of trauma resulting from low- or high-voltage exposure. These injuries can cause extensive thermal burns, deep tissue damage, and systemic complications affecting multiple organ systems. The pathophysiology and severity depend on factors such as voltage, current type, and duration of contact.

Early evaluation should include cardiac monitoring, laboratory tests, and imaging as indicated. Management strategies focus on airway protection, fluid resuscitation, burn care, and preventing complications such as rhabdomyolysis and delayed neuropathy. Patient education and structured follow-up are vital to addressing long-term sequelae. Emerging therapies, such as stem cell treatments and Poloxamer-188, offer promising future directions. This activity provides a comprehensive overview of the evaluation, treatment, and ongoing research related to electrical injuries. This activity also reviews the pathophysiology of electrical burns, highlighting the unique mechanisms of injury involved. Additionally, this activity underscores the crucial role of the interprofessional healthcare team, encompassing trauma, critical care, burn specialists, and rehabilitation, in the timely evaluation, management, and rehabilitation of patients with electrical injuries, thereby improving patient care and outcomes.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify the key mechanisms and types of electrical injuries, including flash, flame, lightning, and true electrical injuries.

  • Implement evidence-based protocols for the acute stabilization and ongoing treatment of patients with electrical injuries.

  • Select appropriate interventions, including fluid resuscitation and airway management, based on the severity of the injury and the extent of organ involvement.

  • Collaborate with burn specialists in burn care, critical care, cardiology, and neurology to provide comprehensive treatment to patients with electrical injuries.
