Activity Description

Violence in healthcare settings presents a growing global concern, creating significant challenges for healthcare providers and institutions. Patients and visitors often experience severe mental distress and frustration due to a perceived urgent medical problem, pain, or fear of the unknown. Long wait times, overcrowding, and staff shortages further exacerbate these emotions, impairing rational judgment and increasing the likelihood of violent behavior. This issue endangers medical staff, other patients, and the overall quality of care while contributing to heightened stress and burnout among healthcare professionals. Mitigating violence in healthcare requires a multifaceted approach that involves identifying underlying causes, implementing preventive measures, and equipping staff with the necessary skills and resources to manage such situations effectively.

Evaluating and managing violence in healthcare settings requires a thorough assessment of the patient's medical history, mental status, and potential contributing factors. A comprehensive history and physical examination help differentiate between functional and organic causes of agitation, guiding appropriate intervention. Initial management should prioritize de-escalation techniques in a controlled environment, with physical or chemical restraints used only as a last resort when the patient poses an immediate danger to themselves or others.

This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance learners' competence in evaluating and managing violence in clinical environments. Participants will broaden their grasp of the causes, presentation, and best practices for assessing and mitigating this potential crisis. Greater proficiency will equip clinicians with the skills to engage in interprofessional coordination to address violent incidents with comprehensive, team-based interventions.

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, and social workers.

  • Apply effective interprofessional team strategies to mitigate violence and promote a culture of safety in healthcare environments.
